Hipster Pattern (pdf) sizes S, M, L
How to Use This Pattern
1. Open the file in Adobe Reader.
2. Print at 100% scale / actual size (do not scale to fit).
3. The pattern prints on three A4/Letter sheets. Align and tape the pages together along the dotted lines.
Note: This pattern does not include seam allowances. Add your preferred seam allowance to the side seams and the bottom edges.
Sewing Notes
• You’ll finish the leg and waist openings with fold-over elastic (FOE).
• Sew the side seams with a serger/overlock stitch.
• Choose a stretch fabric that has both lengthwise and crosswise stretch. Good options include cotton blend jersey and lycra/spandex knits.
Choosing Your Size
Refer to the size chart (in cm) below.
When sewing briefs, the hip measurement is the most important factor in selecting the correct size.
S | M | L | |
---|---|---|---|
Waist | 64-68 | 72-76 | 80-84 |
Hip | 88-92 | 96-100 | 104-108 |
How to Sew Hipster Panties
1. Finish the crotch lining front edge
Serg the front edge of the crotch lining piece to prevent fraying.
2. Assemble the crotch seam
The seam allowance will be enclosed between the lining and the main fabric, so layer the pieces at the crotch in the following order:
• Place the FRONT piece right side up.
• Place the BACK piece right side down, aligning its crotch edge with the front.
• Place the LINING piece right side down on top of the back piece, aligning and pinning all crotch edges together.
3. Sew the crotch seam
Stitch through all three layers along the crotch seam using a straight stitch or zigzag stitch.
Turn the lining to the inside so that its wrong side lies against the wrong side of the front piece. Smooth out the layers and pin the lining in place.
4. Finish the leg openings
Apply fold-over elastic (FOE) to the leg openings using a zigzag stitch.
Tip: Test sew the FOE on a fabric scrap first to find the right amount of tension. The finished edge should lie flat and smooth, without puckering (see photo for reference).
5. Sew the side seams
Align the side edges and sew the side seams using a serger or a zigzag stitch.
6. Finish the waist
Apply FOE to the waist opening with a zigzag stitch, using the same method as for the leg openings. Adjust the tension so the elastic lies flat and snug but not tight.
